Type A vs. Type B Assisted Living Facilities In Texas
When looking to purchase insurance for your assisted living home it is always in your best interest to consult with an agent who is actively involved in the industry and understands how your facility operates. Often times we hear from clients that their former agent had no idea the type of work they did. Most say he/she was classifying me as a nursing home causing me to pay large premiums meant for large commercial operations. To help out our agency has designed a quick guide to help explain each facility and it operations as defined by the Texas Department of Aging and Disabilities.
Type A Facility:
In a Type A facility a resident must be physically and mentally capable of evacuating from the facility without aide from staff. This can include non ambulatory individuals who can successfully operate their wheelchairs or other assistance device to evacuate in an emergency. As for care, residents in Type A facilities do not require routine care during night hours. Even though care is not routine during sleeping hours large Type A facilities are required to have a 24/7 awake staff on duty. Smaller facilities however are not required to have a 24/7 staff. Any facility with 16 beds or less is considered a small facility, any facility with more than 17 beds if classified as a large facility.
Type B Facility:
Unlike a Type A facility residents in a Type B facility may require assistance to evacuate in the event of an emergency. They may also have difficulty in following directions under certain conditions such as an emergency. Patients also may require routine care during the nighttime hours. As a result of the continued care during the night a 24/7 awake staff is required at all times.
Alzheimer’s facilities may be licensed as a Type A or Type B facility but are certified to provide specialized care to residents with Alzheimer’s or related illnesses.
All assisted living facilities operating in the state of Texas must be licensed with the Texas Department of Aging and Disability, or DADS for sort, if they house more than three residents and provide personal care. All facilities undergo a licensing inspection prior to opening to determine the number of beds the facility is equipped to handle. DADS then will inspect each facility annually to determine if all the proper precautions and steps are being taken to insure the safety of each facilities residents. All facilities should have their license prominently displayed for the public to see.
